Condolences
So sorry for your loss. Although I only had a small amount of time with him when he first came to Hilton, I got to know him well in later years. He was a great guy and will be missed by all who knew him.
I remember band, 8th grade. I remember maybe breaking conducting batons? I remember using that voice of his and being very animated on that podium. I remember him in another class, French maybe ( I am not sure). Did he take students to France?
My favorite memory is Broadway Show Night. I remember him dancing to "Honey Bun" wearing a coconut bra and a grass skirt and a wig. It comes up every now and then and we start singing.
I am truly sadden to hear this. He was a memorable teacher. The ones you remember clearly years after you leave their teachings. Hugs to the family. <3
My children Jamie and Christopher (now 35 and 31) had music with Mr. Smalley and lovingly called him "Mr Small Guy". He had a great sense of humor. I recall him on a Broadway Shownite a looong time ago when he danced the My Little Honey-Bun. He left a great legacy with all his students and he will be missed.
Mr. Smalley was band director at Hinsdale Central School when I was in middle school. I was in the color guard. He had a huge impact on many lives at Hinsdale Central School for many of the students. We were all sad when he left our school and moved to Hilton. My condolences to the entire family.
I have very fond memories of high school due in large part to Mr. Smalley. He was just an all around great teacher. He connected to all of his students, even the shy ones like me. He had a way of using humor to pull a great performance out of each of us!! He was an asset to the entire Hilton Community. Rest in Peace Mr. Smalley. And thank you for touching the lives of so many students.
Mr. Smalley you were one of my favorite band teachers. You helped me grow not only in music but as a person as well. I could always turn to you when I was having problems. You are still a wonderful man and I am truly blessed to have known you and to have had you as a teacher.
Mr.Smalley will greatly be missed. With him being a band instructor for my mom back in the day in Holley. In which he then pulled me in when I was old enough to hold drumsticks, and got me started with Ray Sheheen. Then getting me into playing drums in Jazz Band for him.All great experiences. Even right down to the Friday's of Hilton's Football games, he would share stories with me, and always get my head straight before the games. Overall his Huge Heart will be missed,he wasn't just a teacher, band leader for everyone in school, he was a friend. My heart goes out to the Smalley family.
He was an amazing band leader and was so proud! I can still see his face light up when we would play The Joker! RIP Mr Smalley, you helped make some very proud moments!!
You were the best band teacher I ever had. There wasn’t a day that went by that you didn’t make me smile or laugh. I will always remember 2nd period band class. You always made it fun and your class was the only one I looked forward to because of you. You will be missed. God bless you .
Mr. Smalley was one of the best music instructors that I have had. He will be sadly missed by his students. Prayers for the family.
I’m not sure if I would have graduated high school if David Smalley was not my concert band, marching band and jazz band director. He was a mentor to me, taught me how to be a better trumpet player that got me into the US Army Band. Not only was he a good teacher, he would listen to you like a parent. This wasn’t a job to him, it was a passion. I’m sure he went home at night and complained about Klippy. He was fun to be is class with and always had a sense of humor that made the tough and awkward years of high school bearable. When he needed to he was tough like a father and set me straight when I needed it. Bubba, you will truly be missed. Next time I play Children of Sanchez, it will be in honor of you.
Hilton bands will surely miss this man. What a great testament to a true leader and one who had the respect of all. Rest in peace Bubba.
I was in Hilton High School from 1985-1989. Mr. Smalley was one of the first teachers, that truly showed he cared. He would take the time, to listen and give encouragement. We will miss you, Mr. Smalley. Rest in Peace, sir!
We lost a great soul in Hilton, He is and amazing teacher and wonderful friend. He touched so many hearts... RIP
We are very sad to hear of the passing of David. We treasure the memories of him being our favorite instructor for marching and concert band. He took our Marching band to Germany which was one of our best experiences ever. Thank you Mr. Smalley for your love of music and all your students. He will be greatly missed. Our prayers go to his family.
