Obituary of William John Simmons
William “Bill” John Simmons, 78, of Rochester, NY passed away peacefully on June 7, 2024 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. After graduating high school and obtaining his technical degree in mechanical drafting, Bill proudly served in the US Army, Signal Corps from 1967-1969. After his service, he took a job as a technical drafter and designer at Eastman Kodak Company. Following a career spanning over 30 years, which was marked by the acquisition of multiple patents, Bill was able to retire early to pursue his hobbies, including woodworking (at which he was quite skilled), reading, word puzzles, and lunch with friends. He was known for his elegant problem-solving capabilities and ability to fix anything. In his final years, he held a tremendous appreciation for those who were by his side for his health needs, including his team of doctors at the Wilmot Cancer Center at Strong Memorial Hospital, the ICU team that helped to navigate his last days, and the aides and friends who provided care and comfort.
He is survived by his partner of 33 years, Sheron Gardner and his dog, Taz; his children, Laura (Pal Suranyi) Spruill, Dawn Simmons, and Matthew (Melissa) Simmons; his grandchildren, Kinga, Benett, Samantha and Luke; his sister, Elaine Diederich; his half-brothers, Mark and Terry Simmons; his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Edith Peterson Simmons; and his wife, Linda Muir.
