Growing up in Millerstown, PA, Preston enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating on the Juniata River. He graduated from Greenwood High School and Penn State University. While in the Army, he was stationed at the Cold Regions Research labs in Hanover, NH, and summers would be spent on the Greenland Icecap.
He then worked at Eastman Kodak as a design engineer until his retirement.
In his adult years, singing was his passion. He sang in the Bethany and Messiah church choirs, the Greece Choral Society, and the Finger Lakes Choral Festival.
Teaching his children, grandchildren, and scouts about canoeing, fishing, skiing, and camping was great fun. Family was his joy and always came first.
